Happiness

“Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be” Abraham Lincoln

Happiness like fear is an illusion, you can choose to be happy as you read this words right now. And like fear I believe that they are three treats that keep us from being happy.

Past/Future.

For whatever reason people surrender their happiness to passed events remembering what once was or to future events believing in what could be. I am a strong believer in creating a better future for your self and feeling the happiness that comes with it. But you can’t neglect this present moment right now and the happiness that holds it.

Once I have it.

I’ll be happy once ____ fill in the blank. It could be a person, promotion, or material object and once again this illusion of feeling happiness once is attained is robing of our happiness at the present moment. I believe in setting goals and achieving the goals once set for once self, and achieving the goal does bring great joy and happiness.

Comparing your self.

You can look at someone struggling and feel better about your self for not being in that situation, by the same token you can look at someone with the money, car, house, job (you name it) and feel bad about your current situation. There is nothing wrong with wanting a life filled with nice things that money can buy, but don’t put yourself down for not having that life here at the moment.

Next time that fear sneaks its ugly head remember that you can choose happiness because at the end both emotions are an illusion that affects your emotional state, and that feeling is real, so at the end ask your self how do I want to feel today?
